Every employee in Qatar must have a written labour contract registered with the Ministry of Labour (MADLSA). Qatar's Labour Law No. 14 of 2004 sets mandatory terms for working hours, leave, termination, and end-of-service benefits. This guide covers contract types, required clauses, and employer obligations.

Contract Types

  • Fixed-term (limited) contract — has a specific start and end date, typically 1-5 years. Automatically renews unless either party gives notice. Most common in Qatar.
  • Open-ended (unlimited) contract — no end date. Either party can terminate with notice (1 month for employees with less than 5 years, 2 months for longer service).
  • Part-time contract — for employees working fewer than standard hours. Must specify the exact hours and days.

Mandatory Contract Terms

Every Qatar labour contract must include:

  • Employer and employee full names and identification
  • Job title and description of duties
  • Contract start date and duration (for fixed-term)
  • Basic salary and any allowances (housing, transport, etc.)
  • Working hours and rest days
  • Probation period (maximum 6 months)
  • Leave entitlements (annual, sick, maternity)
  • Termination conditions and notice period

Working Hours and Leave

  • Standard working hours — 48 hours per week (8 hours per day), reduced to 36 hours during Ramadan
  • Annual leave — minimum 3 weeks per year (4 weeks after 5 years of service)
  • Sick leave — 2 weeks full pay, then 4 weeks half pay per year
  • Maternity leave — 50 days with full pay
  • Rest day — minimum one day per week (Friday is standard)

Contract Registration with MADLSA

All employment contracts must be registered electronically through the MADLSA portal. The contract must be in Arabic (with English translation permitted). Both employer and employee must sign. An unregistered contract exposes the employer to fines and the employee to potential visa issues.
